Here it is. Will play with it until I am happy with data fit and may extend it out to 15-20 years age classes. It’s a dynamic model amenable to gaming based on thousands of field observations. Discussion What I saw from year to year though were what looked like compensatory density dependent adjustments in age specific survival so it flip flopped p due to competition from yr to yr. This fact is not amenable to deterministic Markov models like Leslie UNLESS you ‘game it’ or program in ‘if Sxi > or < Sxi critical-then-change-Sxi+ or-n’ ie compensatory survival feedbacks to other age classes. The latter more realistic run works but stability hangs on a few percentage survivorships of juveniles age classes and only includes 8 Age classes total. Conclusion I concluded that the dynamic nature of feedbacks assures high survival of recruits to replace low adult mortality. Note how with even static Survivorships (Sij diagonals in L) there is an innate generation of wild fluctuations in age-class abundance in the curves at the bottom but I caution that in the field this is difficult to tease apart from random effects of migration linked as it is to weather and food availability. This phenomenon no doubt leads a lot of people to think a population is in trouble when only short-term observations are made and it is not true. Time lags are working to smooth out the age class distributions and real population. You only come to know these statistics as probably true after years of observation. I did 4 with thousands of observations and it was just starting to sink in. Keep in mind that these parameters apply only to the female side of the population. Carcinogens Created by Various Water Treatment Methods. Jorma Jyrkkanen, BSc, PDP, Researcher

Water treatment to reduce risks of communicable diseases may increase risks of cancers Cancer Risks from Water Treatment Process's. THM’s; Trihalomethanes; Chlorination By-Products (CBP's) 1,2-dichloroethane, see link http://193.51.164.11/htdocs/monographs/Vol71/015-dichloretha.html dichloromethane (side issue; solvent residue of decaffienated coffee) chloroform(trichloromethane) CHCl3 bromoform CHBr3 bromodichloromethane CHCl2Br dibromochloromethane CHClBr2 They are Cancer Group B carcinogens (shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals…[my comment..we are animals, mammals to be precise]). Trichloromethane (chloroform) is by far the most common in most water systems. Dibromochloromethane is the most serious cancer risk, (0.6 ug/l to cause a 10-6 cancer risk increase) followed in order by Bromoform (4 ug/l), and Chloroform (6 ug/l). Current regulations limit the concentration of these 4 chemicals added together (total trihalomethane or TTHM levels) to 100 ug/l. Kenneth P. Cantor et.al. Dec 1987 JNCI [ found that people who drank 8 cups of chlorinated tap water for 40-59 years had a 40% greater risk of bladder cancer than those who drank less tap water or unchlorinated water. There are more precursors present before filtration, so we want to reduce or eliminate the time chlorine is in contact with this water. If some oxidation before filtration is required, an alternative disinfectant like potassium permanganate or peroxide could be considered. Note that this may not be an option if prechlorination is necessary to achieve required CT values. The EPA has indicated that the best available technology for THM control at treatment plants is removal of precursors through "enhanced coagulation". Enhanced coagulation refers to the process of optimizing the filtration process to maximize removal of precursors. Removal is improved by decreasing pH (to levels as low as 4 or 5), increasing the feed rate of coagulants, and possibly using ferric coagulants instead of alum. For point of use systems at homes, activated carbon filters are the most effective treatment. Reverse osmosis units will also eliminate trihalomethanes. In addition, oral exposures to potassium bromate have been shown to cause renal cancer in rats. Chloramination; and DBP's Or some combine chlorine withammonia in a disinfection method called chloramination. Chloramines are composed of three chemicals formed when chlorine and ammonia-nitrogen are combined in water. In high doses chloramines cause blood and liver damage in laboratory animals. Monochloramine is preferred because of its biocidal properties and minimal taste and odor. Monochloramine is created by controlling the chlorine-to-ammonia ratio to a value generally less than 5:1 by weight or 1:1 on a molar basis. The Chloramines are: monochloramine (NH2Cl) dichloramine (NHCl2) trichloramine, nitrogen trichloride (NCl3). I would expect fluoride to behave like these other halogens, chlorine and bromine, and generate a similar class of carcinogens and related byproducts. The reader should search the literature if they are curious about this. I have heard that fluoridation in the USA causes 10,000 additional cancer deaths per year. I do not recall the reference. Over-dosing is very likely for diebetics who drink large volumes of water and they are at special risk if it is added to the water. Fluoride is present in a balanced diet so one has to wonder why the health authorities wouldn't rather simply promote a balanced diet rather than fluoridate the water. To sort through the health effects puzzle mozaic as it develops, keep abreast of research at Entrez PubMed or Medline etc. online journals, and compare original research results with what EPA and NIH are saying and how they translate this into policy recommendations. Another journal with some interesting relavence is Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety One of the biggest concerns I have is that to escape the known toxics DBP's from chlorination, many communities are getting on the chloramine bandwagon despite the fact that the health effects and toxics BP's are poorly known. Water policy should evolve towards removing undesirable substances rather than replacing them with toxics and perhaps we should regard water in a more sacred light like our distant ancestors did rather than regarding it as a good hiding place for our excrement and toxic wastes and pesticide residues. Sacred springs were places of worship to the ancient Celts and Norse. What was so wrong with Grannies old Rain Barrel anyway? How exactly did we, and the millions of other species, survive hundreds of millions of years of evolution without chlorinating our drinking water? One of my greatest joys is hiking in the mountains is stooping to drink from a spring gushing forth from the base of a scree slope. To know how terrible city water is, one only has to do this once. The overall risk to human health associated with the ongoing A(H5N1) outbreaks in wild birds and poultry has not changed and remains low at this time. CDC, along with our state and local public health partners, continues to actively monitor people in the United States who have been exposed to infected birds and poultry for 10 days after exposure. To date, more than 6,300 people in 52 jurisdictions have been monitored since 2022, and only one human case has been identified An H5 candidate vaccine virus (CVV) produced by CDC is nearly identical or, in many samples, identical to the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of recently detected clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI A(H5N1) viruses in birds and mammals (including the recent outbreak in farmed mink in Spain) and could be used to produce a vaccine for people, if needed, and would provide good protection against the clade 2.3.4.4b HPAI A(H5N1) viruses circulating in birds. His confession, considered just the tip of the iceberg, has reignited the simmering debate about the whole phenomenon of Aids in Africa. Report by Baffour Ankomah.  In a shocking confession, made on camera in a new documentary – Cold Case Hammarskjöld – a former member of South Africa’s Apartheid-era intelligence service says that the Aids virus, and other diseases, were deliberately spread among the population in an effort to kill off as many blacks as possible. His confession, considered just the tip of the iceberg, has reignited the simmering debate about the whole phenomenon of Aids in Africa. Until February 2019, most Africans did not know about the Sundance Film Festival, a programme of the Sundance Institute, which takes place annually in Park City, Utah in America. Now they know because something controversial happened at the Festival this year that will live with Africans for a long time to come. Having had 224,900 attendees in 2018, Sundance is the largest independent film festival in the US. This year it took place between 24 January and  3 February – the attendance figure is not yet out. What is out is controversy – a damning confession by a former Apartheid-era operative who admitted on camera, in one of the films shown, that he and his colleagues at the South African Institute for Maritime Research (SAIMR), which masterminded coups and other forms of violence across Africa in the 1970s and 80s, deliberately spread the HIV virus in the Southern African region to wipe out black people. Alexander Jones, who says he “spent years as an intelligence officer” with SAIMR 30 years ago, became the centre of attraction on the third day of the Sundance Festival when the Danish/Swedish-made documentary, Cold Case Hammarskjöld, was screened. Sources in South Africa say SAIMR was linked to the country’s notorious chemical and biological warfare (CBW) programme headed by Dr Wouter Basson, a programme which Apartheid racists used as a cover to kill black people in South Africa and beyond or do them serious harm. The racists’ ‘operational area’ was what used to be called the ‘Frontline States’ (now known simply as the SADC region). Worse, when independence was approaching in Zimbabwe, there are suggestions that Ian Smith’s Rhodesian government, with tacit support from South Africa, rushed to remove the evidence by killing a lot of black people who were subjects of the CBW experiments. Digging out the truth Cold Case Hammarskjöld was made by Mads Brügger (Danish) and Göran Björkdahl (Swedish). The documentary investigates the case of the former UN secretary-general, Dag Hammarskjöld, who died in a mysterious plane crash near Ndola, Zambia, in 1961. We were at war. Black people in South Africa were the enemy… During the hearings of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1998, letters with SAIMR’s official letterhead were found suggesting that the CIA and British intelligence had agreed that “Hammarskjöld should be removed”. But London and Washington denied involvement in Hammarskjöld’s assassination. In the course of making the new film, Brügger and Björkdahl’s investigations led them to Alexander Jones, who told them on camera that SAIMR (which had operated with the support of the CIA and British intelligence), used bogus vaccinations to spread the HIV virus in the SADC region. “We were at war. Black people in South Africa were the enemy,” Jones told the filmmakers. SADC Region of South Africa Where AIDS was spread by Poisoned Vaccines He confessed that he and his SAIMR colleagues “spread the virus” in the 1980s and 90s under the command of their leader Keith Maxwell, who wanted a white majority country, saying “the excesses of the 1960s, 70s and 80s have no place in the post-Aids world ”.  “What easier way to get a guinea pig than you live in an Apartheid system?” Jones says in the film. “Black people have got no rights, they need medical treatment. There is a white ‘philanthropist’ coming in and saying, ‘You know, I will open up these clinics and I will treat you.’ And meantime [he is] actually the wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Maxwell died in 2006. People who knew him say he had no medical qualifications but operated clinics in the poor black neighbourhoods of Johannesburg. His headquarters was at Putfontein where his signpost, with his name ‘Dokotela Maxwell’, still hangs in front of the building where he operated. One local shopkeeper said Maxwell had given “false injections”. But Claude Newbury, an anti-abortion doctor, told the filmmakers: “He was against genocide and he was trying to discover a cure for HIV.” Jones, however, insists that Maxwell used the cover of a doctor to do “sinister experimentation”. His claim was backed up by Ibrahim Karolia, whose shop was across the road from where Maxwell operated. He told the filmmakers that Maxwell had provided “false injections” and “strange treatments”, and also put patients through “tubes” which he said allowed him to see inside their bodies. Jones also disclosed that SAIMR operated outside South Africa. “We were involved in Mozambique, spreading the Aids virus through medical conditions,” he says in the film, revealing that he did visit a research facility in the 1990s that was used “for sinister experimentation” and that the intent was “to eradicate black people”.  “What easier way to get a guinea pig than you live in an Apartheid system?” Jones says in the film. “Black people have got no rights, they need medical treatment. There is a white ‘philanthropist’ coming in and saying, ‘You know, I will open up these clinics and I will treat you.’ And meantime [he is] actually the wolf in sheep’s clothing.” South Africa’s Josef Mengele Documents discovered by Brügger and Björkdahl show Maxwell held extremely disturbing views. “[South Africa] may well have one man, one vote with a white majority by the year 2000,” Maxwell wrote. “Religion in its conservative, traditional form will return. Abortion on demand, abuse of drugs, and the other excesses of the 1960s, 70s and 80s will have no place in the post-Aids world,” he added. According to the Observer South Africa, which broke the story, “The [Maxwell] documents read like the fever dream of a man who aspired to be South Africa’s Josef Mengele. [Joseph ‘Angel of Death’ Mengele was the senior SS officer who carried out inhuman experiments on Jewish prisoners at Auschwitz during World War II – Ed.] There are detailed, if sometimes garbled, accounts of how he thought the HIV virus could be isolated, propagated and used to target black Africans.” One SAIMR recruit, Dagmar Feil, a marine biologist, was murdered outside her home in Johannesburg in 1990 for fear she would expose SAIMR’s dark deeds. We all know how Aids is transmitted from person to person; there is no confusion there. The question is whether or not another agency played an active part in starting or accelerating the chain-reaction in some places. Jones says it did and that the agency was the dreaded SAIMR. Her brother, Karl Feil, told Brügger and Björkdahl: “My sister came to me and said she needed to confide in me. She sat with me and said she thought they were going to kill her. She said that three or four others in her team had already been murdered, but when I asked what team, she said she couldn’t tell me. “The topic of Aids research came up several times, quite loosely in conversations, I never put two and two together. Instead, she asked me to go with her to church, so she could make right with God. Weeks later she was dead.” But while the revelations in the documentary have stunned the world, the blowback has already started. The New York Times has dismissed Alexander Jones’ revelations as a “conspiracy theory”. Reporting his story on 27 January, the paper asked the question: “But is this true?” “The notion that HIV is a man-made virus introduced as population control has been floating around for decades,” The New York Times says. “Before the conspiracy theory took hold in Africa, it appeared as part of disinformation campaigns from the Soviet Union during the Cold War.” So now it is the fault of the Soviet Union! But it is the usual trick the Western establishment media employs to defend Western interests. “Scientists immediately cast doubt on [ Jones’] claim, which they called medically dubious. ‘The probability that they were able to do this is close to zero,’” The New York Times goes on to say, quoting Dr Salim Abdool Karim, the director of Caprisa, an AIDS research centre in South Africa. The paper says Dr Karim cited “the immense resources that would be required to conduct such a far-fetched attempt at genocide. Notwithstanding the technological limitations of the 1990s, including [the need for] facilities to rival that of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the US, in addition to millions of dollars in funding, HIV is extraordinarily difficult to isolate, transport and grow in a laboratory environment, let alone distribute en masse in a clandestine operation,” Dr Karim was said to have explained. Yet, apart from wheeling out just one African (Dr Karim) to dismiss Jones’ account, The New York Times named no more scientists in its story to justify the assertion that “scientists immediately cast doubt on the claim”, apart from quoting Rebecca Hodes, director of the AIDS and Society Research Unit at the University of Cape Town, as having said: “Such mistruths can cause very real problems. One dangerous consequence of these allegations is that they have the potential to sow mistrust and suspicion of doctors and the medical establishment, and that they may confuse people about how HIV is transmitted.” The truth will out Not so. We all know how Aids is transmitted from person to person; there is no confusion there. He also spells out the motivation behind it – “to eradicate black people” – so that the whites could continue their dominance in South Africa. “We were at war”, he adds, implying that all is fair in love and war. This has nothing to do with the often excellent work that doctors and the medical establishment, faced with HIV/ Aids, did to stem the tide of the disease. They were, and are still in some cases, firefighting and deserve all the credit they get. The question remains, who started the fire in the first place? Jones’ confession is a bombshell. It confirms what many suspected at the time but were unable or indisposed to pursue further. It also helps explain many inconsistencies in the story of the development of Aids in Southern Africa. But this is clearly just the tip of the iceberg – underneath lurks perhaps one of the most terrifying stories of modern times, how the Apartheid regime deliberately set out to commit genocide and how close it came to achieving its ends. The confession might bring a sense of closure for some of the millions of Aids victims and their families or it may spark fresh anger. Of equal significance, it will finally lay to rest the oft-cited trope that Africans brought the curse of Aids on themselves due to their ‘unbridled sexuality’. Why did Jones confess after such a long time? We cannot know for sure but there is such a thing as living with a guilty conscience and it will not be the first time that someone approaching the end of their lives feels compelled to confess to sins in order to lift the heavy burden they have carried on their souls for so long. Molecular epidemiological studies have indicated that most, if not all, of the early diversification of HIV-1 group M likely occurred in the area around Kinshasa, then called Leopoldville. All of the known HIV-1 group M subtypes were identified there, as well as additional lineages that have remained restricted to this area (Vidal et al. 2000). Leopoldville was also the place where the earliest strains of HIV-1 group M were discovered (Zhu et al. 1998; Worobey et al. 2008). Genetic analysis of infected blood and tissue samples collected from residents of Kinshasa in 1959 and 1960, respectively, revealed that HIV-1 had already diversified into different subtypes by that time (Worobey et al. 2008). Finally, demographic data indicate that pandemic HIV-1 emerged at a time when urban populations in west central Africa were expanding (Worobey et al. 2008). Leopoldville was the largest city in the region at that time and thus a likely destination for a newly emerging infection. Moreover, rivers, which served as major routes of travel and commerce at the time, would have provided a link between the chimpanzee reservoir of HIV-1 group M in southeastern Cameroon and Leopoldville on the banks of the Congo (Sharp and Hahn 2008). A single prion polymer may be the trigger from what I can tell. "Our computational and experimental analyses indicate that Qs (glutamine), specifically, increase the propensity for toxic interactions by disordered proteins, which, in turn, may contribute to the pathology of Q-rich proteins in disease." My suspicion turns now to dietary sources and here they are: High glutamine Foods: While animal proteins are highly rich in glutamine, there are numerous vegetables as well that would do the trick. Here I get an AHA moment. I recall a mitochondrial antibiotic study by Sameer Calghatgi. Antibiotics can produce lipid peroxides which can rupture mitochondria and ROS which can lead to mutations in P53 genes. This is a clue the stressor that might be linked to aberrant glutamine production by Glial cells (might not be getting the enzyme for conversion to glutamate ) so that antibiotics or related substances trigger pathological prion folding by excess glutamine buildup in the brain. microRNAs might be connected to this story by virtue of being a bad boy in the protein folding story. Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute Chronic Wasting Disease and the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-food Sectors: Current Knowledge, Risks and Policy Options ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a prion disease that affects cervid (deer) species and has been found in both wild and farmed populations in the U.S., Canada and abroad. In this report policy options that may be relevant to reducing the impact of CWD on the Canadian agri-food and agriculture sector are described. Given the nature of the disease, policy options are relevant to either the farmed or wild sector or both, as appropriate. The policy options are situated in the context of the current state of knowledge, stakeholder and rightsholder risk perceptions and policy preferences. The disease was initially observed in research facilities of Colorado and Wyoming in the late 1960s. In Canada, the first CWD cases were identified, retrospectively, in mule deer at the Toronto Zoo, from post- mortems on animal samples from deaths over the period 1973 to 1981 (7 positive animals found from deaths occurring over the period 1975 to 1979) (Dubé et al, 2006). The first farmed cervid was found with the disease in 1996 in a Saskatchewan elk farm (in captive elk that were imported from South Dakota (Williams and Miller, 2002)). In the following years, CWD was detected in farmed white-tailed deer and elk in Alberta and in wild cervid populations from Saskatchewan and Alberta (Kahn et al., 2004). CWD was found in a red deer farm in Quebec in 2018. CWD prevalence in North America has greatly increased in the last decade. Prion infectivity persists in the environment—animal carcasses, predator faeces, soil and plants—for more than 10 years, serving as a long-term source of infection (Georgsson et al., 2006). To date, no natural transmission of CWD to species outside the Cervidae family has been documented in wild or domestic animal populations but research is on-going. The transmission of prions from one species to another is limited by a transmission barrier. The strength of this barrier depends on multiple factors including the primary sequence of the PrPC of the new host and the PrPCWD from the inoculum and the transmitted prion strain (e.g., Hill et al., 2000). Experimental data, however, has shown that the transmission of CWD to other species, such as cats, pig, sheep and rodents, is possible. Of special concern is the possible transmission of CWD to non-cervid species used in the human food supply chain, especially cattle and other livestock, due to the potential emergence of prions with zoonotic capacity (as with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)). The interaction of cattle and cervids is common in CWD-affected areas of North America. CWD agents from different species (white-tailed deer, mule deer and elk) are transmissible to cattle after intracerebral inoculation (Hamir et al., 2005; Hamir et al., 2007b; Hamir et al., 2011b; Greenlee et al., 2012), and the characteristics of the disease are very different from BSE (Hamir et al., 2011b). In experimental treatments, no oral transmission of CWD to cattle has occurred, and no CWD prions were detected in cattle that were exposed to CWD- contaminated paddocks for 10 years (Williams et al., 2018). Thus, the risk of CWD transmission to cattle from normal interaction with cervids is currently believed to be very low. There is no evidence of transmission to humans, yet there are concerns about the zoonotic potential of CWD. Nonetheless, questions remain regarding CWD transmission to other wild and domestic animals, into the human food supply (in the case of untested animals and antler velvet) or to humans themselves. Further research into Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute Chronic Wasting Disease and the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-food Sectors: Current Knowledge, Risks and Policy Options iii these issues is needed. Furthermore, active disease management practices are warranted to minimize the risk of CWD transmission. The perspectives of rightsholders and stakeholders impacted by CWD are important for future policies. Using primary survey data, supplemented by secondary data sources, we present the level of knowledge, attitudes and management preferences for CWD. Although the methods to elicit these perspectives has some variation due to the unique characteristics of each group, several trends were observed: Canadian Public: • Over time, the number of people who have ever eaten venison has increased. Eating frequency does not appear to be increasing across the population over time • Awareness and knowledge of CWD has dramatically declined across time. • The public is significantly interested in mandatory CWD animal testing before meat is marketed and continues to be interested in supporting tax increases to pay for management or surveillance. This implies that healthy cervid populations are important to the Canadian public. Indigenous Rightsholders • Ungulates (noting particularly caribou to whom transmission is possible) are a major component of food security for Indigenous peoples, but also contribute to significant cultural values including sharing networks. • Concerns about cultural tipping points, arising from environmental conditions, costs, and time constraints of local people, have been expressed by First Nations. However, safety of ungulate meat is an important concern, given the dietary role of cervids. • The Alberta Assembly of Tribal Chiefs, representing First Nations in Treaty 6, 7 and 8, passed a resolution in June 2019 supporting collaborative research on CWD surveillance. • There are questions about how the continued spread of CWD, as well as management efforts (e.g., health advisories), has the potential to contribute to increased food insecurity among Indigenous communities, whose traditional economies are also compromised by other stresses, such as habitat degradation and climate change. • A greater role of communities in disease surveillance (e.g., monitoring) and in decisions of wildlife management may contribute to both social and ecological resilience. Communication and management programs must be centered in the Indigenous communities with recognition of the importance of the cultural significance and context of wildlife. Cervid Producers • Cervid farming in Canada was a relatively new industry when CWD was discovered in the farmed sector in Canada. Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute Chronic Wasting Disease and the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-food Sectors: Current Knowledge, Risks and Policy Options iv • CWD caused a serious negative economic shock to the industry, which has been declining in total farms and total animals since CWD was found. • Cervid farmers are very aware of and knowledgeable about CWD due to the significant economic impact on the industry • The herd certification program (originally VHCP, now HCP), initiated in 2002 and revamped in 2018, is aimed at preventing CWD exposure, certifying safe cervid production for consumption or trade purposes, and is a prerequisite for the federal government undertaking destruction of a confirmed infected herd and compensating owners should CWD be discovered. Some provinces have complementary programs. • Mandatory testing for all farmed cervids slaughtered (or other deaths) in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec (rather than sampling as was done prior to 2018) and the Yukon makes testing rates for CWD among farmed cervids higher than in wild cervids; positive cases recently are lower in absolute numbers relative to wild cervids. Alberta Hunters • An extensive CWD monitoring and surveillance program, and hunter surveys in the province, have shown relatively constant hunter awareness and perceptions of CWD over time. • License sales are not declining over time, indicating that hunters are not reducing their effort, even with moderately high levels of CWD present. Hunters are concerned about CWD impacts on wildlife herd health, and do not think eradication is likely. • US research indicates reduced hunting effort occurs when CWD reaches high (>30%) prevalence levels. While this is not evident yet in Canada, increasing numbers of hunters are checking prevalence levels prior to draw submission, indicating a shift could occur if prevalence increases dramatically. • Management options such as hunting season expansion can provide a high benefit-low cost approach to CWD management rather than financially and socially costly herd reduction approaches. • The removal of the replacement tag program in Alberta in 2019 (for harvested deer that test positive) was not popular among some hunters although recent data suggests that the majority of hunters are not opposed to this change in program. Professional Outfitters • Survey results show that outfitters had the highest awareness of the disease in wild cervids when compared with other stakeholder groups, yet did not support CWD management options that increase hunting of animals • Their views about acceptable management strategies differ considerably from hunter views and from views of the public • Even given the severity of CWD spread in parts of the country, CWD is not seen to be the most significant risk to outfitter livelihood associated with cervid populations. Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute Chronic Wasting Disease and the Canadian Agriculture and Agri-food Sectors: Current Knowledge, Risks and Policy Options v Cow Calf Cattle Operations • Wild ungulates are a concern in terms of disease transmission (CWD and other diseases) and feed consumption. • Producers generally like cervids and do not want to see them eradicated from their properties and worry about costs of reducing contact between cattle and cervids. • Preliminary results indicate limited concern over possible trade barriers impacting the beef industry due to CWD. There are numerous policy response areas related to CWD that are being considered. The policy space is complicated by the potential for the disease to cross both wildlife and domesticated animals, as well as provincial and national borders. Commensurately, there are a complex set of agencies associated with parts of the policy environment. No one agency has authority over all of the recommended or identified policy areas considered below. Associated industries are also involved in policy making processes and could implement codes of conduct to address CWD. However, clarifying which and how policy options might be implemented (including identifying any coordinating agency responsibilities) is still to be determined. The disease is considered to have differing degrees of urgency among constituencies and development of policies based on risk assessments must be careful not to be too reactive as the trade-offs can be difficult to assess ex ante. Despite these difficulties, we identify and discuss 10 policy options. The focus is primarily on policies that directly (cervid farm) and indirectly (through reducing spread and prevalence in the wild) affect the Canadian agri-food and agriculture sectors. The ten options chosen are those for which there are frequent recommendations or for which the outcomes seem clearer given previous policies applied across a range of North American jurisdictions and based on research findings to date. In most cases, due to limited publicly available data on the costs of programs which have been implemented by federal or provincial agencies, it is not possible to develop consistent measures of costs or benefits of the suggested policies to specific groups. Decisions around policy adoption in this area cannot purely be made on the basis of market costs and benefits as the disease being managed has the capacity to inflict high non-market costs. Significant research is necessary to properly assess public and private market and non-market values associated with the outcomes of policy choices. Furthermore, additional detail on a range of items including enforcement efficacy and cost, communication approaches and other elements will be required for a complete analysis. Nevertheless, we present an overview of ten policy areas which can be described as having the most potential for reducing the impact of CWD on the Canadian agri-food and agriculture sectors. Later in the document we identify a broader range of policy measures to be considered that include investing in research and other measures to address CWD concerns. The deadly virus — known as GX_P2V — was found in high volumes in the lungs and brain of mice that were engineered to reflect the genetic makeup of people, according to a study recently released in Beijing and reported by the New York Post. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing that a SARS-CoV-2-related pangolin coronavirus can cause 100% mortality in hACE2 mice, suggesting a risk for GX_P2V to spill over into humans,’’ the study authors wrote. The deadly virus is a mutated version of GX/2017, a coronavirus cousin that was said to be discovered in Pangolins three years prior to the pandemic. Pangolins, also called scaly anteaters, are mammals found in warm areas of the planet, the Post reported. All the mice that were infected with the virus died within just eight days, the report said. GX_P2V had infected the lungs, bones, eyes, tracheas and brain of the dead mice, ultimately causing the death of the animals. In the days before their death, the mice had quickly lost weight, exhibited a hunched posture and were noticeably sluggish. The report also noted that the eyes of the mice all turned completely white the day before they died, the Post reported.

Francois Balloux, an epidemiology expert at University College London’s Genetics Institute, slammed the research as “terrible” and “scientifically totally pointless,’’ according to the New York Post. “I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting a weird breed of humanized mice with a random virus.
