New Marmot Subspecies Discovered in Yoho Park
I was shocked to see a blonde, not an albino Marmot, on Mount Odaray in Yoho National Park in August of 2013. I have hiked over much of BC and never seen one as blonde as this one. I have seen them with a silvery blonde mane. I think the brown cheek color is possibly dirt.

It had a bluish grey nose and a buffy brown cheek but aside from that, was otherwise entirely blonde. I realized this was a mutation and a new subspecies if not a new species. I named if after me the discoverer and Tammy Whynette. Marmota columbiana jyrkkaneni whynetteii.

I examined the eyes in more detail to rule out the possibility this was an Albino and had my confirmation. The eyes were dark. It was not an Albino.
