Cherwinsky revealed in her in-depth analysis of Kraft Mills in Eastern Canada, the PCB’s and DDT are manufactured as a by-product of the Kraft process of making paper. The finding of rising levels of PCB’s and DDT in Northern Canada’s MacKenzie river therefore comes as no surprise to me since the new ALPAC Mill came on stream relatively recently in this drainage in Northern Alberta. Mercury was also elevated in mill effluents she examined so that also comes as no surprise. PCB’s are still being used in transformers in Canada but the levels have been administratively deceptively reclassified as zero to make them apparently vanish from public perception. This however would not account for the rising levels of PCB’s in the cod. Another additional source for these pollutants is the melting permafrost related to global warming, where long held residues that have deposited from air pollution and were bound by ice are now being liberated. In summary, the rising PCB’s, DDT and mercury are no surprise for anyone who has studied bleached kraft mill effluent (BKME).
