Roman Soldiers Toolkit. Tools of Conquest. 5 Feb 2011. Jorma Jyrkkanen

The Roman Soldier's Weapons, Gladius and Pila The Roman Soldier's Weapons, Gladius and Pila by Jorma Jyrkkanen 5 February 2011 With this tool kit and body armour, shield, the Roman soldier conquored from Constantinople to the British Isles and defeated the Gauls at the siege in France where the King, Versingetorix was defeated by Caesar at Alesia France in 52 BC, taken to Rome in shackles, humiliated for 5 years and executed for all the world to learn that Rome was the Empire to fear. Overview of the Centurion's outfit. Note the tanged Gladius blade between the canted Pila. Detail of a Pila, one of two spears carried by the soldiers, one short, one longer. By imbedding one in the shield of an adversary, the shield was rendered useless exposing the opponet to the longer pila making defeating him easier. The Gladius, short sword of the Centurion. It probably had a higher carbon content than the longer iron swords of the Gauls and was know to break them in a cross-wise strike. I believe Rome's secret weapon was tempered steel. The Hittites were able to make steel and Rome may have learned of the technology from them or perhaps from Persian Smiths. The making of Wootz steel and Damascus steel is a story Rome would have been very interested in. I myself have heard of Ukranian farmers case hardening steel by quenching in manure. In close combat a short sword and short spear is more effective because a longer one needs room to swing so the Centurion would have closed quickly for the kill. Rome's mastery of Casting gold, silver, lead, copper and bronze wonderfully evident with this magnificant piece. With such technology in the times of Caesar, the known civilized world outside Asia was put to the manacles and made slaves of the Roman Empire. One Romans soldier killed 150 lions in one day in the collusiem with such weapons. https://jorma-jyrkkanen.livejournal.com/158711.html
